Story about our Tailor Man
Here's a question for you: ever had it happen to you that you go out in search of a new pair of jeans on just a regular old day, and it turns into a perfect day the minute your find the pair of your dreams? Yes? Well, then you might also be familiar with the feeling that sneaks up on you when you realize wearing them is going to have to wait a while because the jeans turn out to be too long (or occasionally perhaps too short). Or, god forbid, you realize they don't have a chainstitch.
Well, fret not, because we now have Memet! Who's Memet? Well, Memet is a tailor who came to Holland 21 years ago: no schooling worth mentioning, and not a word of Dutch in his vocabulary. There was, however, one thing that he did, and did well at that. It was, wait for it.. tailoring. Who needs Dutch words when actions speak louder than words anyway?
Having been a tailor at Oger, the best , high class company for bespoke suits in Holland for many years, Memet did learn Dutch words, but more importantly, decided to pursue his dream: to share his passion with the world, like we want to share ours with the world too. Cut to Memet opening a tailoring services shop, available and accessible to all, for all kinds of cloth- and clothing-related problems: shirts, pants, t-shirts, curtains, you name it. He could modify it to the owner's specifications.
When we opened the Tenue de Nîmes shop on 21st of November 2008, somebody told us that the Elandsgracht is like a little village where everyone helps eachother, so when you need bread you go to the bakery on the Elandsgracht; if you need cigarettes you go to the cigar shop on the Elandsgracht, and so on. Along that line of thought, we went to Memet and told him about our dream and passion.
A new relationship was born. In the beginning we brought him 4 pairs of jeans a day, which would be finished the next day. Hardly a stretch, fair enough. Today, two years on, we bring in a multiple of that number every day and we still don't know how Memet does it, but he still manages to get it all done the next day.
Last year we had saved a little bit of money and we bought a Union special, a chainstitch machine. We brought it to Memet and when we came into his store carying this tool, Memet had a smile a mile wide, looking like a kid in a candy store. He paid no mind to what we were saying but immediately made space for the machine and installed it. Ever since that beautiful day we are able provide you with a chainstitch, making sure your awesome days of finding the perfect jeans don't turn into disappointments at having to have them adjusted to your specific requirements.
